Sanibel had 6,382 residents in 2020, with more than half the island set aside as wildlife refuge and only two chain restaurants allowed. Most customers are visitors who research before they cross the causeway. After Ian cut that causeway in 2022, clear Google updates and a current website became the core of island marketing.
An island of independents
Sanibel counted 6,382 residents in 2020, which also notes that more than half the island is wildlife refuge, including more than 5,200 acres in the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The same source says only two chain restaurants are allowed on the island.
That shapes search. Visitors cannot fall back on familiar brand names, so they compare local options on Google: reviews, photos, menus, hours and how easy it is to book. Small businesses compete with each other on equal terms, and the one that presents itself best online usually wins.
When the causeway went down
Hurricane Ian made its first Florida landfall on nearby Cayo Costa on September 28, 2022. On Sanibel, the storm washed out at least five sections of the causeway, the Florida Phoenix reported. A one-time emergency convoy crossed on October 11, and the causeway reopened to residents on October 19, 2022, ahead of schedule, after more than 100 crews put in about 36,000 work hours, according to Roads and Bridges.
Businesses then reopened over months and years, each on its own timeline. Every one of those openings was a search event: visitors asking Google whether a favorite restaurant, shop or rental was back.
Making reopening news easy to find
Google's help pages recommend special hours for closures of 7 days or less and the temporarily closed setting for longer, off-season or indefinite closures. They also note that temporarily closed businesses can rank after open ones for broad searches, so switch back the day you reopen.
Then prove it. Post new photos, update the menu or rental details and add a short note to your website so all your channels say the same thing. A website care plan means those changes do not wait on a developer.
Reaching visitors before they cross the bridge
Lee County's visitor bureau, which markets the area as The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel, counted about 3.2 million visitors in 2024. Many of them plan days or weeks ahead: where to stay, where to eat, where to rent bikes, which beaches are best for shelling. The bent-over shell hunting posture is called the "Sanibel stoop."
Helpful pages that answer those planning questions, written by someone who knows the island, earn visits long before the trip. Our tourism and vacation rental approach and our property management work cover how rentals and island businesses turn that research into bookings.
Helene and the habit of staying current
Two years after Ian, Hurricane Helene pushed the Fort Myers tide gauge to 5.12 feet, the second highest reading on record, Local 10 News reported. Storms are part of island life, and the businesses that recover search traffic fastest are the ones that treat their Google profile and website as live notice boards. Neighbors on Fort Myers Beach have learned the same lesson.
